Institute Annual Quiz Night

Our Annual Quiz Night took place on 19 November at Leicester University.

We always manage to attract a good level of interest for this event, and this year was no exception, with 17 teams taking part. The quiz, designed and run by Mal Fairhurst, was as varied and challenging as usual.

At the end of a mentally demanding evening, a team from Towergate rather worryingly called "The Undecided", took the trophy and prizes. Captained by Allan Smith, they finished with a total of 100 points (out of a possible 140). "Delilah" from Hyrifa finished in 2nd place and "Stephen’s Angels" (without Stephen) from Oval scooped up the coveted wooden spoons.

Joanne Power from Kelly Insurance Services won the top raffle prize and will be looking forward to evening dinner for two at the Old Greyhound in Great Glen before Christmas.

We have a specialist Music Quiz planned for March 2009, so make sure you get your team entry in early for that one.

Annual Dinner
14 November 2008

Well the dinner is over for another year and what a success. VIPs included the Lord Lieutenant, Lady Gretton, The Lord Mayor, Councillor Manjula Sood and the Chief Fire Officer, David Webb to name just a few.

The Ramada Jarvis Hotel (The Grand) pulled out all the stops to ensure everyone had a great time with many guests dancing to the early hours at the 80s disco.

Ted Cassidy (Special Olympics) started the speeches rolling followed by Clair Hayward (CII Representative), then my own speech with a theme of Leicester Regeneration at its heart and finally the guest speaker, Ian Richards made us all laugh.

A sketch artist also did the rounds of the tables sketching the guests and providing them with a great souvenir of the evening.

The charity collection raised over £2000 by way of donations from the guests which will go to my nominated charity which this year is The Special Olympics to be held in Leicester next year.

Special thanks must go to all the sponsors for the dinner and of course Mary Rogerson and Sandeep Kandola for making the necessary dinner arrangements.

Unlike the captain of the ship I was not the last person to retire to my quarters at the end of the evening (or more likely 5am). So who was the last person? Answers on the back of a postcard to……………….

Charity Race Night
10 September 2008
Open or download a poster for fuller details

Tickets are selling well but there are places left to fill and the poster is placed here to encourage you to download it and circulate it among your colleagues and to prompt you to get a small group together to support this event which is in aid of our President's Charity - fund raising for the Special Olympics to be held in Leicester in 2009.

I am sure we have all been enthralled by the current Olympic Games taking place in Beijing and are aware of the amazing achievements of athletes and participants in all sports. Well, the Special Olympics takes the Olympic ideal to a very special group of people (those with learning difficulties) and brings them together from countries all over the world to compete at a version of the Olympic Games, with sensational results.

Leicester will host the 2009 Special Olympics but funds are needed to make it a real success. By attending our Charity Race Night you will be doing your bit to help. Come along. We can assure you will have a great evening.

Booking details can be found on the attached poster. The event is being held in the Charles Wilson Building at Leicester University
